Entertainment Reviews:
Rating: C --
A generic, paint by the number, disaster flick with so-so special effects at the climatic payoff.

Deep Impact isn't especially deep, and the extent of its impact seems limited. But it does turn out to be a fairly involving movie.

Orlando Sentinel
Why isn't it scarier? Maybe its targets are too scattered, its final impact too shallow. Maybe director Mimi Leder couldn't locate the right overall tone. And maybe the two writers simply don't take the story very seriously.

Rating: 3/5 --
There are some impressive disaster effects in the final hour, and thanks to some clever and knowing twists, Deep Impact keeps you averagely entertained right up until the cataclysmic tidal-wave finale.

As a result, Deep Impact seems mildly engaging, but, well, rather shallow.

Tulsa World
The filmmakers want us to care about all these people, but we never really get to know them, and there is no sense of impending doom except when Leoni starts chugging martinis.

Mimi Leder's cautionary comet tale was most unexpected -- the disaster movie as chick flick.

Product Description:
When it is discovered that an enormous comet is on a collision course with Earth, a handful of Americans make different preparations for the end of the world. While Leo Biederman (Elijah Wood), the fourteen-year-old amateur astronomer who discovered the comet, deals with the pangs of first love, an ambitious newswoman (Tea Leoni) attempts to reconcile with her estranged parents. Simultaneously, a former astronaut (Robert Duvall) finds himself in the stars once again in an attempt to prevent the catastrophe from occurring. Mimi Leder (THE PEACEMAKER) directs from a script by Bruce Joel Rubin (GHOST) and Michael Tolkin (THE PLAYER).
